The research activities will concern the application of statistical methods and machine learning models to molecular biology/molecular anthropology in the forensic field, to determine the biogeographical origin of an unknown sample (a sample from an individual whose biogeographical origin is unknown) with sub-continental precision. The activities include the creation of a dataset containing the SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) of geographically labelled genomes; the study and application of statistical and machine learning methods for the selection of variables to identify the most significant SNPS for geographical classification; the study and application of various methods for supervised multi-class classification (e.g. Random Forest, neural networks, CNN, LSTM) and their implementation.
